Meals On Wheels (Hot or Frozen Meals)
|
|
Meals on Wheels provides a nourishing meal at a reasonable cost. Volunteers will
deliver meals, heated or frozen, as you prefer. This service is available 5 days per
week. Frozen meals are available in place of hot meals, or to provide for weekend
coverage.
|
|
Meals on Wheels provides a daily security check and social contact for people living
alone. It is also a way for clients to maintain independence in their own homes.
|
Who is eligible?
Meals on Wheels are designed to assist the frail elderly and physically disabled
adults. A doctor's referral is not necessary. Referrals are accepted from
professionals, family and the recipients themselves.

How to order a meal?
Phone the Centre between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at 613-258-3203

How to cancel a meal?
Cancellation of meals must be telephoned to the Centre
before 10:00 a.m. on the day the meal is not required.

Wheels to Meals
Wheels to Meals is better known as the "Wednesday Luncheon". A hot 3 course meal is
served at the Centre, with the menu changing weekly. Reservations must be made before
12:00 p.m. Tuesday. Fees apply.
Wheels to Meals is a social time. The luncheon is a time for clients to meet old
friends and make new ones. Guest speakers are scheduled throughout the year.
Need a special diet?
Calorie reduced, diabetic, gastric and other diet dinners are available upon request.

Escorted Transportation Program
|
|
Transportation, both local and long distance, is provided by volunteer drivers. All
medical requests receive top priority. Drives of a social nature are provided when
possible.
|
|
When the request is received, we will contact one of our volunteer drivers, who in
turn, will confirm the drive with you. KDHSI carries insurance coverage on all of
our volunteer drivers.
|

How to arrange escorted transportation?
Request for drivers must be made through the Centre, Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m.
and 4:00 p.m. by calling 613-258-3203.

Please call at least one day in advance for local drives, and when possible, one
week in advance for long distance drives.
|
Fee Schedule
Long distance drives are based on a flat rate according to destination. Local
trips are set at $6.00 per round trip. A local drive is limited to no more than
three stops. Parking fees are the responsibility of the client.

A transportation fee schedule is available at the Centre.

Friendly Visiting
|
|
The friendly visiting program is designed to provide one-to-one friendship and support
for senior citizens and physically disabled adults who have little contact with the
community. No fees apply.
|
|
Clients who are isolated in their homes or in hospitals benefit from a Friendly
Visitor. A regular weekly visit from a concerned volunteer brings companionship, an
opportunity for social activities, and increased interaction with the community.
|
What to do on a visit?
Provide friendship and comfort

Talk
Read mail, books, magazines
Play cards and other games
Go for a walk
Have a tea or coffee
Work on crafts
Play music
Develop new interests
Write a letter

These ideas are only a few of the many things you might do on a visit. The range of
activities is only limited by the imagination and interest of you and your new friend.

Daily telephone calls to area shut-ins for friendship and support. No fees apply.

Foot Care Clinics
|
|
Proper foot care is very important in all stages of life, but especially in later
years. Painful foot problems may prevent someone from leading a fully active life.
|
|
KDHSI’s Foot Clinic provides a registered nurse to address all your foot care needs
and a hostess present at the clinic to chat with clients and re-book
appointments. Fees apply.
|
What the Foot Clinic offers?
Foot care that includes trimming of nails, treatment of calluses, corns and ingrown
toenails. Additional services include foot massage, blood pressure checks,
nutritional advice and answers to health related questions.

Why is the Foot Clinic important?
- Improperly cared for feet can be very painful causing difficulty in walking
- A fact of life, especially for seniors, is decreased mobility and agility, which can make foot care a problem
- Many people do not like to bother their doctor with foot problems, and other alternatives can be very expensive
|
When is the Foot Clinic available?
The Foot Clinic is held weekly by appointment. Clients must register beforehand by
phoning the Centre at 613-258-3202.
